Augusta Historical Society at the Butler County Courthouse Centennial
El Dorado celebrated the Centennial of their Courthouse from September 27, to October 2nd. The Historical Societies from Douglass, Remington, Cassoday, El Dorado and Augusta hosted a "History Day" on Wednesday, October 1. All 3rd grade classes from Butler County were invited. History Day was divided into four stations: County Seat/Court House (Civics, Government), Community/Histories (Kansas History), Business/Industry (Economics), and Transportation (Geography). Teacher packets meeting Kansas State Standards for History and Government were available for schools that attended. We had 597 students participate. The grade schools were also invited to participate in a poster contest. Over 1,000 entries were received. The students did a super job. Augusta had hands-on activities provided outdoors by Gary and Norma Agard, John White and Jane Mathias. Gary and Norma showed the students how to make rope. John and Jane demonstrated the corn-sheller. The kids loved these hands-on activities! I want to thank this hard-working group for all of their help. It was greatly appreciated!
