HAPPY NEW YEAR
It’s hard to believe that 2007 is gone. What a fast year. We want to wish you all a very Happy and Healthy 2008.
YESTERYEAR FAIR
Our Yesteryear Fair was held on Saturday, October 6. The weather was beautiful and we had a great crowd. Thank you to these exhibitors: Connie Bourget who made soap, Cecil Hamilton who showed his flint knapping skills, Paul Belt who made buckets and Vickie Hummel who helped children make rope. Four local teachers, Brenda McCoskey, Kristen Martin, Shelly Dunsmoor, and Paula Keefer worked with children on crafts and old-time games in the upstairs of the C.N. James Cabin. Bob and Pat Stanley displayed their “Hard Times” buildings and enjoyed visiting and answering questions about their favorite hobby. Gary Agard and Harold Arnold kept busy taking photos of children on the full-size fiberglass quarter horse. The kids were happy to take the photos home as souvenirs of a fun-filled, educational day. Curtis Swenson from Miltonvale demonstrated his bicycle-powered scroll saw. Kids enjoyed grinding corn with the supervision of John White. Don Blake and Richard Forpahl provided buggy rides, with Charlotte Blake and Anna Forpahl taking care of the ticket sales. Thank you to Norma Agard, Joy Leatherman and Jane Mathias for serving lunch to a larger-than-normal crowd this year. Belinda Larsen also helped serve lunch in between snapping great photos of different events. Faye and Raymond Teegarden and Jim and Vickey Cummings helped sell our new cookbooks.
Troy Nordman announced that we will soon have a working blacksmith shop thanks to Barbara Evanhoe who donated the blacksmithing tools of her late husband, Gary Kroeker, to the Augusta museum. We recently received a $1,000 grant from the Wal-Mart Foundation to go towards building the blacksmith shop.
Shirley Jackson donated money towards benches for our front porch. These benches were ready to use by our Yesteryear Fair. They look great and we want to thank Shirley for her most generous gift. What a relaxing place to sit and visit about old times.
Aspen Peterson was the winner of the “Name the Horse” contest by submitting her favorite name of Thunder.
Thank you, Miller’s 5, for your donation of $100 to the museum on the day of our Yesteryear Fair.
Thank you, City of Augusta, for your continued support of our museum by providing barricades to block off streets for the buggy rides and providing a dumpster. This is greatly appreciated.
RECIPE BOOK
Our recipe book arrived in late summer. We are very pleased with the finished product and have had positive feedback. We want to give a big thank you to our Sponsors: Bank of the West, Cami R. Baker & Associates, P.A., Michael Clifton, CPA, Dillons, INTRUST Bank, Patterson Racing, Inc., Sharp Realty, and White Eagle Credit Union. The price for the cookbook, which has 300 recipes, is $15.00. Again, thank you to Joy Leatherman, Jane Mathias and Norma Agard for all of their hard work to make this project become a reality. And to everyone who submitted their favorite recipes. If you haven’t picked up a cookbook yet, you might want to do so soon!
CHILI FEED/PIE AUCTION
We had our Annual Chili Feed/Pie Auction on Tuesday, November 13. What a great time we all had! Thank you to these people for providing delicious pies: Harlan Bartel, Susan Bartel, Connie Bourget, Diana Burress, Jo Casey, Myra Dean Clark, Shirley Clark, Lucy Clifton, Vickey Cummings, Lisa Daniels, Dr. Sheryl Erickson, Gay Gillies, Carol Hall, Sarah Hammond, Jeannie Higgins, Laurel Hutchinson, Diane Kiser, Dorothie Mahoney, Jaye Mayfield, Eugenia Nordman, JoAnn Palmer, Nina Parry, Paula Pressnell, Carolyn Price, Jane Richardson, Hazel Slyter, DeAnn Triboulet, and June Winger. Thank you to Belinda Larsen, Harold and Valetia Arnold, and Nelva Wentz for providing cinnamon rolls. Thank you, board members, for providing the chili and all the condiments and for taking care of serving the food. A huge thank-you goes to Chuck Korte for being our Auctioneer. We couldn’t do it without you, Chuck! We also want to thank Sherry Cody at the Augusta Senior Center for allowing us to use their facilities once again.
To Larry and Karyl Johnson and Carl and Nellie Fisher, who were unable to attend, we thank you for your monetary donation. Thank you to all who came and ate chili and bid on pies. We always appreciate your support. We hope you had as good a time as we did. This is definitely a fun and entertaining night for all who attend. We will be back again next year and hope you will join us.
REVOLVING DISPLAY CASE
In December we were fortunate enough to have a collection of Santa Claus figures, including many one-of-a-kind hand crafted figures by one of our board members, Harold Arnold. His collection also included fancy Santas, comical Santas and beautiful Father Christmas figures. One of Harold’s favorite Santas is a gardening Santa that says “Ho Ho Ho”. For the past five years or so, he has carved a new Santa each holiday season. Thank you, Harold, for sharing.
SANTA VISIT
Augusta’s Annual Downtown Christmas Parade was held on Saturday, December 1. Following the parade, Santa stopped by the C.N. James Log Cabin to visit with the kids and to check-up on those long Christmas wish lists. I knew that one boy in particular knew exactly what he wanted when he tapped his head and said “I’ve got it all up here” after I asked him if he had written a list for Santa.
VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION NIGHT
Wednesday evening, December 12, was our Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night. We had a great turn-out. This is one way that we can show our volunteers, who help us out in so many ways throughout the year, how much we appreciate everything they do for us. Thank you volunteers. We are so lucky to have you.
MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
Our annual Membership Drive, which started in August, was very successful. We have 101 members for the 2007/2008 membership year. We appreciate those who renewed their memberships and welcome our new members. It is never too late to join the Augusta Historical Society. If you have any questions on how to do so, please call or stop by to pick up a membership form. You can also find this form on our website. If you are not already a member, we would be happy to have you join this year!
